Wolseley at 880 Laurentian Burlington Canada   organized a Jean and Sport Jersey day at the corporate office on Friday Feb 3^rd (weekend of the Super bowl).  They also had a raffle for various prizes that their customers donated.   All proceeds went to Special Olympics.

They invited a Special Olympics athlete to come and make the draws for them that day. Special Olympics athlete Katie Veitch attended the event with her mother Bev Veitch and Coach Cate Hawkins, and Katie drew all of the winning raffle tickets as well as personally handed out Special Olympics pins to every employee on hand.

It was Katie’s very first exposure to a public experience like that and she was sensational.

Katie competes with the Burlington Barracudas swim team and the Skylarks Rhythmic Gymnastics team. Katie has qualified to compete in the Spring Games with the Region 5 swim team.  She will also be competing the weekend before that at the Regional Qualifier for Rhythmic Gymnastics.

Here is a letter that Katie wrote about her experience at Wolseley Canada.

I went to the Wolseley Canada head office. I went with mom and coach Cate. They were having fun  

there. They were wearing jerseys. They had a raffle I picked the raffle tickets.  Wolseley

Canada gave money   to Special Olympics     they gave me a blanket. I gave each person

a Special Olympic pin.  I shook their hands.  I was happy mom took a picture of me.

Richard Roberts Grimsby Community Coordinator has this to say:

It's hard to believe another year of Athletics and Soccer has come to a close. What a year from one of Grimsby Athletes (Benjamin Posavad) going to the Worlds to represent Canada and bringing home a Silver and a Bronze to the great performances of both teams, even under some very hot weather conditions. Of course we can't forget to also thank the coaches and volunteers for their support to help make this another successful year. Onto 5 pin Bowling and Curling in a month or so.

Port Colborne Golf Challenge: 

Port Colborne Special Olympics runs a fundraiser during Canal days. It’s a four day celebration of history and heritage. Whisky Run Golf Course challenges participants to hit a golf ball across the Welland Canal.

“Hit a golf ball approximately 125 yards to clear the canal and win a 9-hole pass to play the Owl Course. Hit a golf ball 145 yards to stay on the sand green and win an 18-hole pass”.

$2.00 for one golf ball $5.00 for three golf balls

All money raised goes to the Port Colborne Special Olympics

The event was facilitated by the Knights of Columbus. Joe Matthews from Knights of Columbus informed council of KC Flag Relay for Special Olympics at Sudbury and introduced all Knights of Columbus members present on the day .

Glenn MacDonell President and CEO Special Olympics introduced Special Olympics athletes and informed council members of Special Olympics activities and events in the community.

Council members were presented with small memento from Special Olympics athletes.

Athletes had great photo opportunity with the speaker and were thrilled to be there.

Special Olympics athletes and their families participated in Peel Torch Run Wednesday June 22, 2011

There were three routes to choose from

21 Division to Derry Road, 12 Division to Derry Road and

New Head quarters to Derry Road since last year.

The activities included Run bike or blade.

Athletes Troy Ford King and Arthur Rea Joined the Run and some of the other

Athletes Lorenzo, David and Julie joined in for the walk from headquarter.

Participants were escorted by police vehicles. It was great participating in the Torch Run and everyone enjoyed the lovely Boston Pizza lunch at the end.

It was supported by Benjamin’s family, friends, fellow athletes, coaches and the community.

Athlete Benjamin Posavad was escorted into the arena by Grimsby firefighters, music playing and team members cheering.

Mayor Bob Bentley and Linda Arbuckle on behalf of MP Dean Allison attended the event. Kurt Pleschke Ben’s National Team Coach and Richard Roberts Ben’s local coach and community coordinator for the Grimsby cheered along with everyone else.

It was great send off for Ben to the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece the birthplace of the Olympics. Ben is one of 350 athletes from Canada and one of 7500 athletes from 185 countries that will be heading to the Games to compete in 22 events.

Kyle Whitehouse Special Olympics athlete from St Catharine’s who is in his last year at Kernahan Park in St.Catharines and wants to be a mechanic was invited as well. Kyle has a long list of athletic accomplishments over the last few years and he will be running the 100m and 200m at the Worlds in Athens. Kyle and Ben have known each other for a while and Kyle has been a positive influence on Ben. Kyle was invited to cheer him on as well as they head off on this great adventure together representing Canada. This was one special evening.
